Practicing for Online Poker Tournaments

Practice makes perfect and if you are preparing for an online poker tournament, practice is critical. If you are registered to play in an online poker tournament, you should first consider the stakes. If it is a free online poker tournament you don’t have much to lose besides your reputation.

If the online tournament requires a registration fee or you are playing for money, you’ll want to be well prepared so you don’t lose your shirt. 

Be sure the online tournament is offered to players of equal skill so you are not outgunned before you start. Spend a lot of time practicing on free sites to hone your skills. 

As an online poker star your biggest problem may be visibility. If you join and play on more than one site you might consider using a different screen name on each site. It will make it harder for other players to track your game and, if these players are also registered for the tournament, you will not risk giving your game away.  

As with any other activity, a player’s style and predictability can be used for competitive advantage. If you want to have a competitive edge you need to remain anonymous when you practice.

If you play with friends in your home town you might even coerce them into meeting you online and helping you practice. While playing poker in your family room might be a good practice session as well, there are differences between playing in an online tournament. You have to know how to use the online site features and if you practice on the online poker site you will be playing in the same environment as the online poker tournament.  

One advantage of online play is that you can keep track of your moves and write notes to yourself. When you back yourself into a corner or make a mistake you can track back to that mistake and think it through for future reference.  

Without the distraction of a room full of players and spectators, you can focus on your practice session and take those lessons into the online tournament.
